Plaid vs Method Financial: Why WIMM Uses Two Bank Connections

Switching to WIMM

Plaid powers transaction sync on Accounts. Method Financial powers debt sync on Debt. Here is what each provider does, why WIMM needs both, and when to connect each one.

You linked Chase on the Accounts page. Your checking transactions show up, budgets update, and life feels automatic. Then you open Debt, add your mortgage by hand, and wonder why WIMM did not already know the balance.

The short answer: WIMM uses two providers on purpose. Plaid handles cash flow (transactions and checking balances) on Accounts. Method Financial handles liabilities (loan and card balances, rates, and minimums) on Debt. Same bank, two different data pipes, because no single provider gives WIMM everything it needs for both budgeting and debt payoff.

Plaid vs Method Financial at a glance

Both connections look like "log into your bank." Under the hood they pull different account types for different pages in WIMM.

Plaid answers: "Where did my money go this month?"
Method Financial answers: "How much do I still owe, at what rate, and what is the minimum?"

Connecting both is not a bug or a upsell trick. Transaction feeds and liability feeds are different products in the banking world. WIMM split them so each feature reads from the specialist, not a half match.

Why not Plaid for everything?

Plaid is excellent at transactions. WIMM uses it for exactly that on Accounts. Plaid also offers a Liabilities product, but WIMM deliberately routes debt sync through Method Financial instead: Method is purpose built for loan and card balance fields (including mortgage escrow where institutions report it), and it is the path WIMM ships and supports on the Debt page today.

Practically, that means linking Plaid on Accounts does not populate your Debt tab. Your Chase checking sync and your Chase auto loan sync are separate steps because they run through Plaid and Method Financial respectively.

Assets and liabilities are not the same feed

Personal finance boils down to two lists: what you own (assets) and what you owe (liabilities). Your net worth is the gap between them. WIMM's net worth page reads both sides, but Plaid feeds most asset-side activity while Method Financial feeds structured liability rows on Debt.

If the vocabulary is rusty, this Khan Academy walkthrough defines assets, liabilities, and net worth in under five minutes.

Checking and savings tell you where money moved this month. Mortgages, car loans, and credit cards tell you how much principal is left and what the lender thinks your minimum payment is. WIMM uses Plaid for the first bucket and Method Financial for the second.

Plaid on Accounts (transactions and balances)

Go to Accounts and choose Connect a bank. WIMM opens Plaid Link. You log in on Plaid's screen (WIMM never sees your password), and Plaid returns a token that lets WIMM read transactions and account balances.

What lands in WIMM after that first Plaid link:

  • Roughly two years of transaction history
  • Ongoing updates when your bank posts new activity
  • Balances that feed your dashboard, budgets, bills, and categorization

Method Financial on Debt (loan and card balances)

Open Debt, switch to the Setup tab, and choose Sync from bank. WIMM opens the Method Financial Connect flow (a guided bank login similar in feel to Plaid Link, but wired to Method's liability network).

Method Financial can pull, where your institution supports it:

  • Mortgages and HELOCs
  • Credit cards
  • Auto loans
  • Student loans
  • Personal loans

Each synced debt lands in your Your Debts grid with a Synced badge. Method returns the fields the Debt Reducer needs:

  • Current balance
  • Interest rate (APR)
  • Minimum payment
  • For some mortgages, an explicit escrow portion (taxes, insurance, HOA) so payoff math uses principal and interest only

WIMM stores an encrypted Method token per linked account so you can refresh later. Tap Sync when you want updated balances (sync is manual in v1, not a silent nightly job).

Method may ask for a verified phone number during connect. That is Method Financial's identity check. You enter it once; WIMM saves it to your profile for future sessions.

Note

Same bank, two logins. If you bank at Chase, you might connect Chase through Plaid on Accounts for your checking transactions and through Method Financial on Debt for your mortgage balance. That is expected. The two providers read different slices of your relationship with the bank.

If you would rather not connect twice

WIMM never forces a second login.

For spending (Plaid's job): use manual import on the free tier, or link once through Plaid on Premium.

For debts (Method Financial's job): type balances in by hand (free), upload a PDF or photo statement on Premium and let AI extract the fields, or use Sync from bank on Premium when Method supports your lender.

All three debt paths feed the same Debt Reducer. The math does not care whether the row came from Method, a PDF, or your keyboard.

Tip

Mortgage payoff projections only count principal and interest toward shrinking the loan. When Method Financial returns an escrow field, WIMM trusts it. When it does not, you may see an amber Review escrow split badge. Fix the escrow amount once and the payoff timeline stops overstating progress.

Security: Plaid tokens and Method tokens stay separate

Both providers store encrypted bearer tokens, never your bank password.

  • Plaid access tokens encrypt with PLAID_ENCRYPTION_KEY
  • Method Financial access tokens encrypt with a separate METHOD_ENCRYPTION_KEY

A leak of one key does not unlock the other. Same AES-256-GCM pattern described in How to Evaluate Finance App Security.

How other apps handle this

When Mint was alive, many users assumed one login filled every box. In practice, aggregators often blended transaction accounts and loan balances into one net-worth widget without the payoff detail WIMM keeps on Debt. Monarch and Copilot lean hard on Plaid-style transaction sync; debt modeling is lighter than WIMM's reducer. YNAB expects you to budget cash flow first and treats debt as a planning choice rather than a synced liability feed.

WIMM's Plaid + Method Financial split is closer to how banks actually report data: spending in one stream, installment balances in another. The tradeoff is one extra connect if you want both automated. The win is that your grocery budget (Plaid) and your mortgage payoff date (Method) each read from the right specialist.

Try it in the demo

See Plaid-style spending sync in the transactions demo: app.wimm.money/demo?mode=transactions. See debt modeling with sample balances: app.wimm.money/demo?mode=debt. When you are ready, link Accounts through Plaid for cash flow, then open Debt → Setup and Sync from bank through Method Financial if you want loan balances without retyping them.
