How WIMM uses AI to build your budget from real spending, adjust it as life changes, and backtest a plan against your history before you commit.

Setting a budget by hand means staring at a blank category list and guessing. WIMM has three tools that turn guessing into something closer to working with a co-pilot. Smart Budget builds the plan, Smart Adjust keeps it current, and Backtest checks it against your real past before you trust it.

Smart Budget: a plan built from your own history

Smart Budget is a wizard that drafts a full budget from how you actually spend. Instead of inventing numbers, it reads your last several months of transactions, finds your patterns, including recurring expenses like that weekly coffee habit, and proposes an amount for each category.

You start by telling it a little about your situation. Your monthly take home pay, how much you want to save, any investing or debt payments, your household size, and your overall priority. You can lean toward saving aggressively, staying balanced, spending comfortably, or attacking debt. The AI shapes the suggestions around that choice, so a debt focused plan looks very different from a comfortable one.

It runs in two modes. Create drafts a fresh plan from scratch. Refine takes the budgets you already have and updates them against your recent spending. Either way, you review every suggested amount in the wizard and can edit anything before it is saved. The AI proposes. You decide. Smart Budget is a Premium feature.

Smart Adjust: keep the budget honest as life changes

A budget set in January is often wrong by April. Groceries creep up, a subscription gets added, the commute changes. Smart Adjust looks at your current budgets next to a full year of spending history and suggests specific changes.

It does real analysis under the hood. For each category it looks at your monthly average, how volatile the spending is, and whether the trend is rising or falling. Then it recommends a new amount with a reason attached, something like noticing you have run 20 percent over a category for three months straight. You review each suggestion and accept or reject it one at a time, so you stay in control.

There is also a Budget Health Check that scans for categories you have quietly underfunded, the ones most likely to trip you up. Smart Adjust is a Premium feature.

Backtest: prove it before you trust it

This is the tool people fall in love with, and it is free. Backtest answers a simple question. If I had used this exact budget for the last six months, how would it have gone.

You take any plan, whether you built it by hand or Smart Budget drafted it, and Backtest runs it against your real spending. For every category it checks month by month whether you would have stayed inside the limit, then rolls it into an overall score from zero to one hundred. A score in the nineties means the plan fits your life. A score in the fifties means you are about to set yourself up to fail.

It does more than grade. It flags categories you spent on but forgot to include in the plan, so nothing slips through. It warns you if the whole plan adds up to more than your average income, which is the most common reason budgets quietly collapse. And it recommends amounts with a small buffer built in, because a budget with no breathing room is a budget you break.

Why this combination is rare

Category budgets are everywhere. AI that drafts the budget from your own data, adjusts it on evidence, and lets you stress test it against your history is not. YNAB and Monarch make you set and tune everything yourself. EveryDollar keeps it manual by design. WIMM brings the analysis to you, while still leaving every final number in your hands. It is the difference between a blank spreadsheet and a co-pilot who has read your last year of statements.
